San Francisco, CA, Jan. 17th, 2010— Independent filmmakers Austin and Brian Chu of San Francisco will be debuting their national documentary on the recession, entitled, ”The Recess Ends” online on Justin.tv, http://www.justin.tv/ on January 17th at 8PM (EST), 5PM (PST). This national documentary has received press from numerous media outlets including CNN, USA Today and the Chicago Tribune.
The Director’s Cut will be shown on Justin.tv on January, 24th at 8 PM (EST), 5PM (PST). During the Director’s cut, the Filmmakers will allow viewers to engage with them and ask questions about the film—all while it is playing.
The Recess Ends film project is based on a five- month journey across the United States in search of personal stories about greatest economic meltdown since the Great Depression. Filmmakers Brian and Austin Chu, two everyday guys turned filmmakers decided to travel to all 50 states to capture the stories of average Americans during this economic crisis.
The filmmakers decided to make their national debut on the web rather then at a film festival because they wanted to reach a larger audience and because they say the film is more about telling America’s story then making money.
“The Recess Ends was never about making money, it’s about allowing people to see what our country is going through right now”, said head filmmaker Austin Chu. “We want people to see how the recession is affecting the entire country and how everyday people are dealing with this economic crisis. The stories we collected are simply amazing and show a snapshot of what our country is going through right now.”
Austin’s brother Brian Chu agreed and said,” We want as many people to see the film as possible—so they can see how some Americans are struggling, while others are re-prioritizing their lives and finding creative ways to get by.”
Austin also believes debuting their film on the web will allow the filmmakers to interact on a more personal level; as they will be interacting directly with fans and viewers during the Director’s cut.

WORLD PREMIERE: PRESS RELEASE
Two Local Independent Filmmakers To Debut New Documentary Film On The Recession
San Francisco Filmmakers Brian and Austin Chu Traveled To All 50 States To Film How The Recession Is Affecting Everyday Americans
San Francisco, CA, Sept, 30th, 2009—Tonight at 8:30 PM, filmmakers Brian and Austin Chu of San Francisco will be throwing a movie premiere for “The Recess Ends”, a national documentary on the recession at the legendary Victoria Theatre in the Mission District of San Francisco.
The Recess Ends film project is based on a five- month journey across the United States in search of personal stories about greatest economic meltdown since the Great Depression. Filmmakers Brian and Austin Chu, two everyday guys turned filmmakers decided to travel to all 50 states to capture these stories.
“As we traveled across the United States we were completely amazed by what we saw,” said Austin Chu. “We got a chance to see how the recession was affecting the entire country and how Americans in different cities and states were dealing with the current economic crisis. We saw everything from people destroying their old homes because they were worth more to them damaged to a family taking in other people who had lost their jobs and lost their way, to even a man who was selling his own blood to get by during the recession.
“Our film captures a snapshot of what our country is going through right now,” said Brian Chu. “It shows us how some Americans are struggling, while others are reprioritizing their lives and finding creative ways to get by. Some of the stories in the film will show hope as well as America’s character and resilience. Our film will also show that America will emerge very different after this crisis. We believe in many ways the recession has brought communities together and has displayed the true hearts of the American people.”
After the movie premiere, Austin and Brian will be throwing a small reception where people can talk to the filmmakers about their project and ask questions. Attendees can also pre-order a DVD copy of the film, which will cost $20 dollars.
Austin and Brian began their trip in San Diego, CA on Jan.24th, 2009 and ended their journey June 1st, 2009 in San Francisco, CA. They traveled through all 50 states including Alaska and Hawaii

He felt the true story is not necessarily about the recession itself, but rather the great Americans who face it each and every day in their own unique way.

Two Independent Filmmakers From California Are Hitting The Road To Tell The Story Of How The Recession Is Affecting Everyday Americans
San Francisco, CA, Jan.24th, 2009—Today, filmmakers Brian and Austin Chu of San Francisco began a four month journey through all fifty states in search of personal stories about greatest economic meltdown since the Great Depression. Their new documentary film project entitled “The Recess Ends” will focus on individual narratives from all classes of society that highlight core American values.
“The main idea of this documentary is to take a snap-shot of what America is going through and how Americans as a nation are getting through it,” said Austin Chu. “America is a beautiful place and so are its people. They are proud even in tough times. We want to show this struggle but also how great Americans can be even when their backs are against the wall.”
“We want to talk to everyone from the unemployed Detroit autoworker now collecting unemployment to the former financial advisor in New York now delivering pizzas to help his family get by,” said Brian Chu. “We also want to talk to the struggling farmer in the Midwest, the casino worker in Las Vegas, and even the street vendor who sells DVD’s in Chicago. How has the recession affected them? And what are they doing about it? Everyone has a voice and we want to know what they have to say.”
Austin and Brian will be traveling this great nation and attending conferences, various events, rallies, protests and even interviewing people on the street. They will talk to politicians, scholars, workers, and even students—to show the recession affects everyone.
This documentary is going to:
- Explore the meaning of friendship and community.
- Search for solutions that reflect American ingenuity.
- Report on the shifting definition of success and the American Dream.
- Find unique stories about the nature of American optimism.
- Investigate American attitudes towards materialism.
Austin and Brian will begin their trip in San Diego, CA on Jan.24th and end their journey May 30th in San Francisco, CA. They will be traveling through 50 different states and as many 55 different cites along the way. When they return from their three-month journey they will begin editing the film, which is expected to be finished in the Fall of 2009.
